In 2024, Ford Pro is at the forefront of electric commercial vehicle adoption, leveraging technology to benefit businesses and urban environments alike. With three years of investing in the segment, Ford Pro’s knowledge of electric vehicles (EVs) like the F-150 Lightning, Mustang Mach-E, and E-Transit enables businesses to capitalize on the advantages of electrification.

ā€œWe believe the commercial sector will continue to lead the electric vehicle revolution, much like businesses spearheaded the early adoption of computers. A lot can be applied from what we learn here to the early majority.ā€

As such, Ford understands that commercial consumers, unlike personal buyers, are primarily driven by practical considerations when making vehicle purchasing decisions, including total cost of ownership (TCO). Their focus is on how a vehicle can enhance their operations and reduce costs. Emotional factors such as brand image and aesthetics, while significant to personal buyers, take a backseat in the commercial context.

Ford’s Motivation for Electrification

Surprisingly, merely six percent of surveyed fleet decision-makers have considered the TCO of EVs in their calculations. Ford believes this oversight prevents them from fully realizing the economic advantages of transitioning to electric fleets. Lower fuel costs and maintenance expenses are key factors in the lower TCO of EVs. For example, data suggests that the Ford E-Transit van requires 48 percent less scheduled maintenance than a comparable gasoline-powered Ford Transit van over five years or 75,000 miles.

Government incentives and tax breaks in America can further reduce the initial costs of EVs and charging infrastructure, making them even more appealing to businesses. Ford Pro EVs can qualify for a $7,500 commercial tax credit under the Inflation Reduction Act, and buyers can also receive up to a 30 percent tax credit for charging equipment and installation costs.

What is Ford’s Stance on Electric Vehicles?

Successful EV adoption depends on a thoughtful charging strategy.

  • Pilot projects: Ford Pro highlights the value of educating businesses and employees about EV charging.

  • Convenient charging locations: Most Ford Pro customers charge their vehicles at home or work utilizing AC chargers, with the E-Transit van easily charging overnight using the 80A Ford Charge Station Pro.

  • Managing an array of requirements: Ford Pro continues to provide a variety of powertrains, including diesel, hybrid, and fully electric options. The F-150 Lightning has been a successful choice for Vestas, a wind turbine company, due to its durability and broad dimensions. Hundreds of F-150 Lightning trucks are now part of Vestas’ fleet, allowing them to operate efficiently in demanding conditions.

  • Partnerships with utility companies: The Smart Charging Bundle in Massachusetts provides businesses free Ford Pro Chargers when they join the Massachusetts Clean Peak Energy Standard, making electrification a more cost-effective and attractive option.
