Could Ford Trademarking the Mustang “Dark Horse” Mean a Special Accent Package?

A trademark that Ford filed for may reveal the winner to the online submissions that the company went through in order to name the new Mustang Black Accent package slated for availability on the 2023 model. This black accent package was announced on Twitter on June 1st and then Ford opened up online submissions to name the package as well. On June 22nd (2022), there was a trademark application for “Mustang Dark Horse” that was filed within the United States as well as other countries. While Ford has not made an official announcement yet, this trademark could signify that the winning submission for the black accent package has finally been selected.

Indications of the Trademark
While the Mustang will be receiving a gorgeous facelift in 2024, Ford’s announcement of the black accent package for the 2023 model could be a final farewell to the sixth generation of this beautiful vehicle. When Ford had initially announced the package, soliciting submissions to be sent in for the yet-to-be-named package, they had done it through an online form. The form has since been closed, and submissions were accepted until 8 p.m. on June 7th, however, a formal announcement of the winner has not been made yet. 25,000 submissions were taken, and that trademark for the “Mustang Dark Horse” was filed on June 22nd, so it seems as though this could be the potential winner. 

Some other popular replies made to the original tweet included some pretty incredible name suggestions as well, with people saying “Black Stallion,” “Midnight,” and “Ghost”, however, none of these have had trademarks filed for them the way that the “Mustang Dark Horse” has. Though nothing has been formally announced in terms of details that will be included within the package, tweets from the Ford company mention it will include black wheels and a  black badge within the new update and package. 

Regardless of what the inclusions for the new accent package will bring, it’s very evident that Ford has succeeded in building the hype and mystery for it to get enthusiasts excited about the reveal of not only the package but the name itself. With the anticipation of the sixth-generation mustang being just beyond the horizon, it’s very likely that the Dark Horse package could be a gorgeous addition to the Mustang family, as well as the perfect send-off.
