On August 1, 2024, Ford Motor Company rolled out its latest iteration of the newly redesigned 2025 Maverick pickup truck. Influenced by the lowered truck era from the mid-1980s to the early 2000s, the Maverick Lobo provides an original canvas for contemporary street truck builds. This all-new model offers buyers a unique choice while retaining the Maverick automobile’s versatility and quality. It enters the lineup alongside the efficient Maverick Hybrid and the off-road-capable Maverick Tremor.

Is There a New Ford Maverick?

The cooperation between designers and engineers led to the Maverick Lobo, displaying on-road tuned suspension and a lowered ride height. The automobile is outfitted with a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four EcoBoost engine that accelerates up to 238 horsepower and delivers 277 pound-feet of torque. That said, it is tested to Built Ford Tough standards and is backed by a factory warranty. The ride height is reduced by half an inch in the front and 1.12 inches in the rear compared to the standard Maverick, with an overall roof height decrease of 0.8 inches.

Josh Blundo, who joined Ford in the 2019 model year, identified potential in a clay model of the Maverick and began altering it with wings, wheels, a front splitter, and widebody components. In turn, his concept inspired a special build by Tucci Hot Rods that garnered scrutiny at the 2021 Special Equipment Manufacturers Association (SEMA) trade show. Blundo’s vision eventually resulted in the design of the Lobo.

Distinguishing the Lobo from the Regular Maverick

The Maverick Lobo preserves typical Maverick styling cues but with unique elements such as a painted rear bumper, a distinctive front aesthetic, and rocker moldings contrasted by 19-inch black wheels and a black-painted roof. On the other hand, the cabin depicts accents motivated by street art spotted by designer Kristen Keenan during her travels. For example, embossed Lobo names on the seats, Electric Lime and Grabber Blue stitching, and graffiti-inspired overprints mirror the latest streetwear tendencies.

In terms of mechanicals, Keith Daugherty and other engineers devoted themselves to modifying suspension components and springs from other Ford performance vehicles to design a genuine on-road performance pickup truck. As such, the steering is tuned for a performance car experience, with torque vectoring through a twin-clutch rear drive unit and advanced brakes featuring dual-piston front brake calipers borrowed from the Focus ST marketed in Europe.

Practical Technological Accouterments

It is worth noting that the standard configuration of the Maverick Lobo integrates all described characteristics, while the high-configuration includes comforts such as a heated steering wheel and seats, a spray-in bedliner, Pro Trailer Hitch Assist, Ford Co-Pilot360 safety features, a moonroof, a 360-degree camera, and Pro Trailer Backup Assist beginning early in 2025.

Lobo drive mode heightens grip, cornering capabilities, and stability, while decreasing understeering. The mode is intended only for closed courses as it triggers torque while minimizing stability control intervention. Moreover, updates to the cooling system incorporate a transmission oil cooler along with a larger fan and radiator from the Maverick vehicle’s 4K towing package.
