Using all-new Ford and Lincoln Digital Experience technology in the 2024 model year, customers can access their digital lives, including their favorite services and applications from Google and Amazon, as well as with Apple CarPlay powered by iPhone and Android Auto. The Ford and Lincoln Digital Experience technology represents a step forward in Ford’s approach to the design and development of in-vehicle infotainment systems. The company declared it is developing more of the software in-house to deliver a higher velocity of updates and improvements.

Moreover, Ford has built a general computing platform to deliver more of the benefits of a software-defined system. This includes transitioning from using two separate modules for the instrument cluster and infotainment system to a single module to facilitate faster software changes and better speed of response to commands via updates. “It was important to choose an operating system with a scalable and open architecture that offers customization to serve the evolving needs of customers over time,” according to the automaker’s website.

At the Start of a Digital Experience

The brand new, Chinese-built 2024 Lincoln Nautilus, featuring a 48-inch panoramic display in addition to an 11-inch touchscreen, is kicking things off. Preferred applications and services are displayed more prominently so drivers have an easier time finding them. They can be moved to the desired spot on the touchscreen or panoramic display for more convenient use. Widgets on each side of the screen are available for further personalization. To that end, each driver can create their own profile with their numerous preferences and settings.

Similar to a growing number of automotive manufacturers, the Blue Oval’s new system is Google-based, meaning it incorporates the Google Assistant for voice control as well as Google Maps for navigation. There is also Google Play for downloading all types of popular applications and video games, including a Ford-exclusive version of Asphalt Nitro 2, when the vehicle is parked. Surfing the web is possible utilizing the available Vivaldi browser or else Google Chrome coming at a later date.

Additionally, Alexa Built-In is available as an alternative for in-vehicle controls such as to search for information, set cabin temperature, find and set a destination, and request a specific broadcast or satellite radio station. It can also assist with making calls, sending texts, controlling connected home devices, or setting a meeting.

Progressing Automotive Interconnectivity

This new Ford and Lincoln Digital Experience is enabled by an operating system that is capable of more than five times faster main processing, four times the memory, nearly 14 times quicker graphics processing, and eight times the storage compared to current infotainment systems in Ford and Lincoln vehicles. Not only that, but it also boasts 5G wireless technology and will improve over time with over-the-air software update capability. The automaker announced customers will be offered a Premium Connectivity plan with a paid subscription to enjoy the best possible in-vehicle experience.

As mentioned, the Lincoln Digital Experience is available on the redesigned 2024 Lincoln Nautilus, which is on sale now. The first Ford vehicle integration has yet to be announced.
