Ford Patents a Multifunction Car Visor!

A patent that was filed back on October 1st, 2020 for a multifunction car visor system by Ford has been published this past April 7th, 2022. It was assigned the serial number 01058786. Let’s take a look at just what the patent is for, and why Ford decided to patent a visor for their vehicles.

A Look into Ford’s Visor Patent
The visor is the part of the interior of a vehicle that has remained unchanged for the most part, even as vehicles evolve themselves. If it has changed at all, it has mostly been in size, maybe shape, or even color. That being said, the patent Ford has published is far more than just a simple change in any of these. Ford plans to bring a fresh and innovative take on the car visor with this multifunctions visor patent.

Within the patent itself, a visor that has multiple layers that will each serve a different purpose is depicted. While the visor will still have the traditional functions it always has, such as the mirror and helping to block the sun from customers’ eyes, the multipurpose visor will also contain a display within itself. The display is said to be used to show the driver anything from GPS route maps to images from the vehicle’s cameras, or even head-up display data. 

The Mirror
Most of us use the mirror on the visor display, especially in moments when time is of the essence and the car visor is one’s best friend. The updated mirror display on the visor will now come equipped with lighting that has user-controllable brightness and an ambient light sensor that could automatically adjust the lighting. Passengers may also choose which part of the visor they would like to use by easily flipping between either-or, rather than having just one single visor with a mirror and the light placed behind the flap. The traditional visor is getting a revamp and it seems to be something to admire when Ford puts it into production.

Ford has been experimenting with adding digital screens in a variety of ways to its vehicles over the recent years. As the years have progressed and more companies have been doing similar things with screens, Ford adding this digital display to the visor to make it multifunctional will surely be something that others will try to accomplish following them. Though there aren’t many details for when the visor will come into production at this time, as soon more information is available there will be an update so stay tuned!
