Ford Performance, renowned for creating some of the most exhilarating vehicles for enthusiasts, has unveiled a groundbreaking addition to its electric vehicle lineup: the 2024 F-150 Lightning Switchgear. This off-road demonstrator vehicle represents an outstanding fusion of cutting-edge electric innovation and high performance, serving as a testament to the brand’s commitment to the electric truck market.

Inspired by the legendary F-150 RTR Ultimate Fun-Haver project from 2016, the Switchgear boasts 37-inch tires and custom carbon bodywork adorned with a Ford Performance 2024 livery, establishing a new benchmark for electric vehicle aesthetics and capabilities. Designed to master asphalt and the most rugged terrains, this unique project underscores the immense potential of electric trucks.

This article delves into the intricate details of the F-150 Lightning Switchgear truck’s technical wonderments, its design, the context behind its creation, and the vision behind this electrifying addition to the Ford Performance Demonstrator program – an initiative that has brought forth innovative vehicles such as the SuperVan 4.0 and 4.2, the Mustang CobraJet 1400, the Mustang Mach-E 1400, and the F-100 Eluminator.

The Basis for the Switchgear

The F-150 RTR Ultimate Fun-Haver project, unveiled at SEMA 2014, stands as a remarkable feat in the world of custom vehicle engineering, blending versatility and high performance in a unique package. This vehicle was a collaboration between Ford Performance and RTR Vehicles, led by world-renowned drifter Vaughn Gittin, Jr. The Ultimate Fun-Haver was based on the Ford F-150, America’s popular full-size pickup truck, and was designed to be a multifaceted performance vehicle capable of impressive feats on and off the road.

Externally, the Ultimate Fun-Haver was equipped with a protective film wrap, custom flares, LED conversion, and specialized lighting, lending it an aggressive and distinctive appearance. The interior was outfitted with Takata Racing harnesses and Recaro Sportster seats, emphasizing the vehicle’s performance-oriented nature. This project demonstrated the immense versatility of the F-150 platform and displayed the potential of custom modifications.

The Electric Off-Roader

One of the pivotal features of the Switchgear is its ability to push the boundaries of what is expected from electric trucks. With improved ground clearance, a significant increase in track width for off-road stability, and enhanced suspension travel, this electric truck is designed to navigate rough terrains effortlessly. The suspension system includes custom control arms, FOX three-inch diameter internal bypass shock absorbers, and unique front and rear bumpers to improve approach and departure angles.

The vehicle’s off-road capabilities are further enhanced with custom independent double-wishbone suspension at the front and multi-link independent suspension at the rear. Carbon composite elements, such as bed sides, front fenders, and rear bumper cover, contribute to its durability. The addition of a front skid plate, steel fabricated rock rails, and limit straps ensures that the automobile is well-prepared for challenging off-road conditions.

Equipped with NITTO Ridge Grappler 37×12.5R18 tires and featuring a unique chase rack with two spare wheels/tires, the F-150 Lightning Switchgear made its public debut at the grueling King of the Hammers off-road racing event on January 25, 2024, in Johnson Valley, California. This event offered an excellent opportunity for enthusiasts and the general public alike to witness the capabilities of this sturdy electric off-roader.
