Henry Ford once said, “Any customer can have a car painted any color that he wants so long as it’s black.” Henry Ford’s predilection for black-painted Model Ts did not have anything to do with the automotive titan’s personal taste, but rather his desire to simplify production and maximize profits. While customers are glad the Ford Motor Company moved away from that single-hue paint program nearly 100 years ago, the brand has never forgotten that chapter.

Indeed, Ford has referenced the quote in its marketing. Ford released the new Platinum Black Package in August 2023 for the F-150 Lightning lineup, marking a new phase in Ford’s development, as it is the brand’s first-ever production-wrapped pickup truck. That said, the vehicle sports a shadowy and dark appearance.

The all-new 2024 Ford Lightning Platinum Black Package is the first special version of the electric vehicle (EV) that consumers have seen so far, with total production limited to 2,000 units. As the name suggests, the package is based on the range-topping Platinum trim and comes bolstered by Ford’s larger extended-range battery pack as standard equipment. This 131-kilowatt-hour battery pack is slated to provide owners with a targeted 300 miles of range, which is in line with the 2023 offering. Output will come rated at 580 horsepower and 775 pound-feet of torque.

A Unique Design

On the exterior, the matte hue is not a painted finish, with Ford opting to wrap the trucks instead. The wrap is applied over the brand’s Agate black color and is backed by a three-year/36,000-mile warranty. Gloss black accents dot the exterior, while 22-inch matte black wheels complement the wrap job. Other adjustments include a smoked light bar and agate black running boards.

There is a similar theme inside the pickup truck, with numerous gloss black accents throughout. That begins with the Nirvana leather seats, as well as the smattering of custom-made interior badges incorporated in the package. As a matter of fact, there is even a number build plate positioned in the door jamb to let owners know exactly which Lightning Platinum Black Package is theirs. The automaker also installed Lightning graphics on the vehicle’s glass roof panel.

Ford’s Special-Edition Acumen

Dave Pericak, the director of Ford’s EV truck programs, details the manufacturer’s expertise in assembling special-edition automobiles: “Ford is no stranger to limited-edition vehicles – and the F-150 Lightning Platinum Black is taking our award-winning electric truck to new levels of stealth and style. This is the perfect choice for those customers looking to make a statement.”

The Ford Lightning Platinum Black Package will arrive for the 2024 model year. Whether a graphics package for an electric vehicle will prove collectible in the future, Ford has some experience in the field. For context, the truck itself is a superb nod to the Bronco Nite and the F-150 Nite trims of the early 1990s, which carried a similar black color scheme and a graphics package.

Additionally, when the Platinum Black Edition goes on sale, Ford will also roll out a new update to all F-150 Lightning owners that will permit them to utilize the Pro Power Onboard system with 9.6 kilowatts of exportable power when the truck is turned off, with an upgraded user interface for clearer understanding of the truck’s available power levels.
