As more automotive manufacturers take it upon themselves to increase the production of and accessibility to electric vehicles, efforts have been made to rapidly increase the necessary resources for those owners driving them. These manufacturers and several large business chains across the United States and beyond have been increasing the availability of electric vehicle chargers at gas stations, public and private parking lots, and more to support the growing electric vehicle trend. To that end, automotive giant Ford is bolstering its extensive charger network even further.
Ford announced new efforts to expand its existing BlueOval network of electric vehicle chargers. Not only does this mean that more chargers will be available around the United States and Canada, but it also guarantees the compatibility of several charger brands with Ford vehicles. In this case, the latest expansion brings with it a collaboration between Ford and charger brands Blink, Red E, and Francis Energy.
Significance of BlueOval Charge Network Expansion
Bill Crider, Ford’s senior director of global charging and energy services, elaborated upon the automaker’s continuing goals, declaring, “Continuous growth of the BlueOval Charge Network, including a critical focus on reliable, fast charging, remains a top priority to provide the best possible electric driving experience for our customers.” He added, “With the addition of the Tesla Supercharger Network along with new fast chargers coming to Ford Model e dealerships in 2024, we are working hard to make range anxiety a thing of the past for Ford all-electric drivers.”
With the assistance of its previous and new charger brand partnerships, Ford is planning on expanding the BlueOval charger network in North America by approximately 25 percent, bringing the total of network chargers to over 106,000. That number is going to increase monumentally by the 2024 model year. Moreover, the three new brands in the BlueOval network will be contributing over 10,000 chargers to this growth, over 500 of which will be DC fast chargers, which is what people will mostly want to rely on away from home.
The Handy FordPass Mobile Application
The BlueOval Charge Network, said to be North America’s largest public charging network by an automaker, is a “network of networks” that provides Ford electric vehicle drivers with access to a plethora of charging providers without the need for multiple apps and memberships. The network provides one seamless stored payment account through the FordPass App, or the in-vehicle’s touchscreen via Charge Assist, eliminating the need for onsite credit card use. To clarify, by creating a BlueOval Charge Network account, drivers can swiftly search for nearby in-network chargers, and once they are plugged into one, activate the charger and pay for the power from the app.
Back in May 2023, Ford announced that it would be teaming up with Tesla to roll 12,000 of the brand’s patented Superchargers into the BlueOval network. However, after Tesla made some upgrades, the estimated number has increased to over 15,000 and counting. These fast chargers will be available next spring (2024) to Ford electric vehicle customers via an adapter.
