The Ford Explorer electric vehicle is the Blue Oval’s second bespoke electric model solely for the European market after the Mustang Mach-E. Just like its other electric stablemate, it is a crossover, but the Explorer wears a more conventional SUV body than the jauntier Mach-E, and it has a few tricks up its sleeves. The most significant detail is that it is not a Ford under the hood.

It is based on the same platform as the popular Volkswagen ID family of electric vehicles. However, the fact that they share a platform does not mean that the Explorer electric vehicle is simply a rebadged ID.4. On the contrary, if a customer was not aware of the VW connection, they would be hard-pressed to tell by looking at or sitting in the automobile.

The Platform

Readers might be familiar with the revered Ford Explorer name if they reside in the United States. The Explorer has been a staple on American roads for several years, but the electric trim is an entirely different animal that is intended for the specific tastes of the European market. It rides on the same modular MEB platform as numerous other Volkswagen products, like the ID.3, ID.4, and the ID Buzz van. Nonetheless, Ford will claim that this is not a half-hearted attempt to get involved in the electric vehicle segment in Europe without too much effort.

This Ford-badged SUV has a unique exterior design that is distinct from any VW product, and the interior is also clearly all Ford. Sharing a platform that has been developed just facilitates Ford’s efforts in bringing development costs down while bringing this product to market more swiftly, which is noteworthy if the automaker wants to capitalize on the quickly growing electric vehicle market.

Infotainment

The Ford Explorer electric vehicle boasts a massive, vertically-oriented touchscreen display that moves out of the way to reveal a covert storage compartment. Even though it reflects spy movie technology, the feature is available in a Ford family SUV. To clarify, the 15.0-inch touchscreen can be adjusted to improve viewing angles, or drivers can simply move it all the way back, which uncovers a hidden storage area that Ford dubs My Private Locker. This secluded cubby is ideal for storing valuables and keeping them away from prying eyes. The touchscreen unit is replete with sleek attributes while also being an intuitive and responsive feature.

The vehicle also has a soundbar neatly integrated into the driver’s side upper dash, right above the HVAC vents. As a matter of fact, the soundbar has striking ambient lighting built-in, which gives the appearance that it is floating on top of the dash.

The MegaConsole

The Ford Explorer electric vehicle pays homage to its American SUV roots by including a staple of American car design in its interior: a massive center console with cupholders. The Explorer SUV’s MegaConsole can accommodate up to 17 liters of usable space, and it is so colossal that it can even store a full-sized 15-inch laptop within its confines.

Not to mention, the giant center console has a removable cup holder for more versatility, and there is even an ice scraper included. The MegaConsole is a sensational feature that demonstrates one of the greatest benefits of electric vehicles over internal combustion vehicles: better interior space and packaging.

The Explorer electric vehicle is a handsome electric SUV filled with various pragmatic touches that should lure new European buyers to the Ford brand. Even though the United States will have to wait for its introduction, the electric iteration of the Explorer is sure to impress buyers once it arrives stateside. After all, Ford is not merely a company that distinguishes itself with SUVs but with a plethora of vehicles that you can be privy to at Sunrise Ford. We ask you to please take the time to look over our new vehicle inventory or, if you are considering purchasing a used vehicle, we have a large array available to you.
