Few customers consider depreciation as part of their vehicle buying equation, whether the automobile is an electric vehicle or one that depends on an internal combustion engine. However, according to the Ford Authority, depreciation is a real cost that must be factored into a buying decision. Other expenses include:

  • Fuel
  • Insurance
  • Maintenance
  • Taxes

2024 Best Resale Value Awards

Kelley Blue Book recently announced the main brands, categories, and top ten winners of its 2024 Best Resale Value Awards, aiming to recognize vehicles for their projected retained value through the initial five-year ownership period. The accolades are based on projections from the organization’s Official Residual Value Guide.

As such, the automotive analysts evaluating these automobiles must assess the output from statistical models built upon millions of transactions. In other words, Kelley Blue Book’s annual Best Resale Value Awards recognize the ten individual vehicles projected to retain the highest percentage of their original manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP).

The automotive landscape continues to change rapidly, with more new introductions of brands and models with varying powertrains each year. Consumers now have more electric vehicle options, such as plug-ins and hybrids, and Kelley Blue Book continues to modify its Best Resale Value Awards categories to properly reflect the marketplace. Even though Kelley Blue Book did not consider low-volume vehicles for their awards aside from those in the luxury, electric, and sports car categories, all are considered KBB’s best resale value within their vehicle category.

Ford F-150 Lightning Success

The Ford F-150 Lightning seats up to six people and accelerates up to 452 horsepower. It also has an EPA-estimated range of 320 miles. Kelley Blue Book rated it highly at 4.8 out of 5 stars. To that end, in the 2023 model year, the Ford F-150 Lightning was selected as one of the recipients of Kelley Blue Book’s Best Resale Value Awards.

The electric pickup truck was privy to the prize once again in 2024, joining the Ford Bronco SUV and the Ford Maverick compact pickup in that regard. When analyzing the statistics, it is pivotal to emphasize that the F-150 Lightning offers owners a solid five-year resale value expected to be 43.1 percent of its original MSRP. According to Kelley Blue Book, award-winning vehicles retain their value better than approximately 95 percent of all other models.

For reference, according to Kelley Blue Book’s vehicle research group, the average 2024 model-year vehicle–whether bought or leased–will likely only retain about 42.4 percent of its MSRP after five years. The figures suggest that a $50,000 MSRP (Plus destination fee) new vehicle today will be worth approximately $21,200 MSRP (Plus destination fee) after five years. By comparison, all vehicles in Kelley Blue Book’s Top 10 Best Resale Value list for 2024 are projected to retain around 58 percent or more of their manufacturer’s suggested retail price after the initial five-year ownership period.
