As promised in a recent teaser, another track-only derivative of the seventh-generation 2024 Ford Mustang has been revealed, this time at the iconic Spa-Francorchamps racetrack in Belgium rather than Le Mans in France, as was the case with the Mustang GT3. Frankly, these circuit-only derivatives for GT3 and GT4 racing are being promoted with such eagerness that they might arrive in the garages of amateur or expert racers well before the street-legal Mustang GT, Mustang EcoBoost, and Dark Horse variants reach nationwide dealerships.

That said, another lively-colored Ford Performance vehicle is prepared to go out and about after the recent debut of the Mustang GT3 at the event of the centenary festivities of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in France. At the occasion, the all-electric, 1,408 horsepower Ford SuperVan 4.2 took second place overall in the race to the clouds – the 2023 edition of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

The New Mustang

Now, though, it is time to pay attention to the all-new Mustang as it continues its official tenure in the SRO GT4 category with a new Mustang Dark Horse-based race car set to compete globally in 2024. By the way, if readers feel the aesthetic of the vehicle is oddly familiar, it’s because of the influence of the Troy Lee Designs livery for Ford Performance. It is quite akin to the one seen on the debut car for the Mustang Dark Horse-based GT3.

With the Mustang GT4 unveiling, the Blue Oval is now traversing a slightly different route. According to an official Ford press release, “All will carry on the standing of Mustang as Ford’s most raced and most successful nameplate, racing at legendary tracks around the world from Daytona to Bathurst, featuring accessibility ranging from the heights of professional GT racing all the way to consumer track days.” In other words, the brand now leans a bit more toward the grassroots amateur instead of the professional race team in a bid to keep the promise of delivering a Mustang race car for any kind of racer around the world.

CrowdStrike 24 Hours of Spa Celebration

The formal unveiling took place in front of the crowds gathered for the CrowdStrike 24 Hours of Spa at the iconic Spa-Francorchamps circuit in eastern Belgium. Mark Rushbrook, Global Director, Ford Performance Motorsports, elaborated upon the significance of Ford’s current race car: “The Mustang GT4 is a key member of our motorsports lineup. Its placement between the Mustang GT3 and soon-to-be-unveiled Mustang Dark Horse R keeps the brand in competition at all levels of on-track performance and is an important part of our customer racing program.”

Speaking of the Mustang Dark Horse R, the company is also working on a Mustang Dark Horse R race car that could form the basis of a new one-make series. Unsurprisingly, it is based on the track-focused Mustang Dark Horse road car, which will sit above the GT in the 2024 Mustang lineup, taking the place of automobiles such as the Bullitt and Mach 1. It packs a 500-horsepower iteration of the 5.0-liter Coyote V-8 engine and will provide carbon-fiber wheels as a standalone option.

The Contribution of Multimatic

Every Mustang GT4 will be outsourced for production to Multimatic. However, the Coyote-based V-8 race engine, entirely developed in-house by Ford Performance, will feature the usual assembly home of Dearborn, Michigan. All details relating to the Mustang GT4 will be revealed in time, as there is yet no word on horsepower, the downforce factor, or performance figures. Rather, Ford merely announced the Mustang GT4 race car relies on Multimatic DSSV dampers, natural fiber body panels, paddle shifters with pneumatic actuation, a dog-ring gearbox made by Holinger, as well as a unique aero package developed to meet GT4 category targets.

Despite the reveal of the Mustang GT4, there is still much information to glean. If you are interested in keeping track of the progress of this race car, please visit Sunrise Ford.
