The year 2023 witnessed a pivotal moment for the muscle car industry as iconic models retired, leaving only a few contenders on the track. In this exploration of the muscle car landscape, we delve into the last gas-powered standoffs, the top-selling models, and electrified futures. Discover the official standings of muscle cars in 2023 as the automotive world continues to dive deeper toward electrification.
With Dodge’s “Last Call” V-8 Hemi-powered Chargers and Challengers, the debut of the next-generation Ford Mustang with the mighty Coyote 5.0-liter V-8 engine, and the race-ready Chevrolet Camaro, it was like a race to the finish of power and style for these four longstanding rivals. However, with the automotive industry constantly changing, several of these automakers had to make some challenging choices for their future lineups.
The End of an Era
The 2023 model year has come to a close. With it, the Dodge Challenger, the Dodge Charger, and the Chevrolet Camaro have all driven off the stage, leaving the Ford Mustang as the last V-8 muscle car standing. The rivalry began in the 1960s and revived in the late 2000s when Dodge and Chevrolet brought back the classic muscle cars with unprecedented power and new styling. That said, the industry is changing, and with it, 2023’s sales display precisely why we had to bid the V-8-powered pony cars farewell.
The four-door Dodge Charger once again outsold its two-door brethren for the calendar year but was unable to close on a high note. According to the official sales records, Dodge Charger sales were down 30 percent year over year for the third quarter of 2023, moving 12,273 units. Even though Dodge was leading the charge for muscle car sales for the better part of 2023, that finish was disrupted as Ford launched the next-generation Mustang.
The Mustang ended 2023 strong, with sales up 21.2 percent in the last quarter of the year compared to 2022, rising from 10,968 units to 13,290. The Camaro also saw a sales surge over the last three months of the year (2023), up 15.8 percent to 6,340 units. The Challenger, on the other hand, saw sales fall in October, November, and December, dipping 26 percent from 12,996 units in 2022 to 9,610.
Further Sales Figures
The Ford Mustang had a total of 48,605 units sold, 2.2 percent more than in 2022, when the company sold 47,566 units. The Dodge Challenger sold 44,960 units over the year, a drop of 18 percent compared to 2022. The Dodge Charger also declined, though not as drastically. 75,920 units were sold for 2023, down 5 percent over 2022. It is likely that the Dodge muscle cars faced a litany of supply chain issues and thus could not finish their final model year successfully.
Just as vexing, it is unknown how many examples of the Dodge Demon 170 were assembled. Finally, the Chevrolet Camaro capped off its production run with 31,028 units sold in total. By comparison, 2022 saw merely 24,652 vehicles sold, an increase of 25.9 percent. For now, all that remains is the Ford Mustang, but not for long, as Dodge prepares its next-generation muscle cars. It is expected that they will be propelled by Hurricane inline-six turbo engines.
