On June 2nd, 2022 United Auto Workers and Ford Motor Company leaders announced their plans to add over 6,200 brand new U.S manufacturing jobs within the Midwest, provide all hourly employees with healthcare benefits on their first day of employment, and lastly they plan to convert the nearly 3,000 temporary UAW-Ford workers to permanent full-time status. This comes ahead of schedule (a year ahead of the 2023 contract negotiations), as a part of the Ford+ growth strategy that they’ve been working on for quite some time.

Ā Bill Ford, executive chair of Ford had this to say about these plansĀ  ā€œFord is America’s Number 1 employer of hourly autoworkers, and this investment only deepens our commitment to building great new vehicles – from an all-new Mustang to new EVs – right here in the U.S. in partnership with the UAW. I am proud that we are investing in the Midwest and taking real action to provide better benefits and working conditions for our workers on the plant floor.ā€

Ford’s Focus on Jobs and the Future
Ford leaders know that the key to success is their employees and taking care of them, which is why they plan to invest $1 billion over the next five years in order to continue improving the workplace and its experience for their employees.Ā

Chuck Browning, UAW vice president and director of the Ford Department has even said this about this improvement plan ā€œThe essential necessity of quality healthcare and full-time employment are long-standing principles that have been communicated to the company by the UAW International Union and our UAW local unions since our inception. I applaud the actions of Ford Motor Company to address these issues outside the realm of collective bargaining. These unprecedented steps taken by Bill Ford and CEO Jim Farley are both a refreshing and innovative approach to labor relations that delivers great benefit when most needed by our hard-working members.

Ford’s Investments
The investment plan of $3.7 billion and the addition of over 6,200 new union jobs will span across the three states of Michigan (receiving a $2 billion investment and 3,200 union jobs as well as nearly 2,000 jobs throughout the three assembly plants within it as well), Ohio (receiving a $1.5 billion investment and 1,800 union jobs), and Missouri (receiving a $95 million investment and 1,100 union jobs). As Michigan has been Ford’s home since the founding of the company back in 1903, they are taking great care in deepening their commitment to the state. Ford continues to grow and show their dedication not only to enthusiasts of their vehicles, but to the people that put their blood, sweat, and tears into making them.
