Ford’s New Trademark Suggests New Trucks are on the Way

Earlier on in the year, Ford let enthusiasts feel the sting of the F-150 Lightning, and now it seems as though they will be doing what nature intended by giving us the Thunder that follows the Lightning. Ford has filed trademark applications with the USPTO for the following names:
“F-150 Thunder,” “Ranger Thunder,” and “Maverick Thunder”. The company has also filed similar applications for trademarks in Canada, seemingly cooking things up for the near future; for now, this remains a Ford mystery electric truck.

Speculation on the Thunder Trademark
Though we aren’t entirely sure how Ford plans to use the Thunder trademark exactly, any auto enthusiast can make their own guesses as to what it will entail, especially seeing a line of trademarks with the Thunder name attached to it. We can assume that the Thunder may be in relation to the F-150 Lightning, and it can be presumed that the Thunder may even be the more powerful plug-in hybrid of the Lightning. Rumors have already sparked about the new Ranger getting a PHEV, however, the F-150 and the Maverick already have hybrid engines and don’t have any plans to switch to plug-in versions any time soon. This may not mean that the trademark will be powertrain related, of course.

It is possible that the Thunder trademark could be an appearance package rather than an entirely new vehicle or lineup. Ford did debut a limited-run Ranger Thunder edition in Europe back in 2020 and was given an “edgier look”, boasting Dark Sea Gray paint, 18-inch black alloy wheels, Ebony black bumpers, red accents, and Ebony black skit plates. The interior also was given Ebony Leather seats, so it is possible that a similarly dark look would translate onto all three trucks. Ford is also capable of building a truck that is more street-oriented and in theory, it is also possible for Ford to mate the more sinister appearance with some unique performance upgrades and better on-road tires. It would definitely be something that is more intriguing for enthusiasts that enjoy a ‘90s-nostalgic feel to it.

There is no definite date for when the Thunder trucks will arrive, but it is possible that it may be something Ford chooses to provide enthusiasts with for the 2023 model year. This could even be a possible appearance package, so realistically, there is no shortage of opportunities for Ford to take advantage of. Hopefully, more information will be released nearing the Fall.
