The Ford F-150 Lightning electric pickup has earned the 2023 North American Truck of the Year for the third consecutive year, surpassing the other two finalists for the phenomenal title, which were the Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 and the Lordstown Motors Corp.’s Endurance pickup electric vehicle. The announcement was expressed at the 2023 North American Car, Truck, and Utility Vehicle of the Year Awards in Pontiac, Michigan, during a joint press conference incorporating the Detroit Area Dealers Association and the Automotive Press Association at M1 Concourse. This is simply the newest accolade for the electric truck’s heap of praise after being named the MotorTrend Truck of the Year for 2023.

NACTOY at its Core

The more typical acronym for the vehicular contest is NACTOY. It began in 1994 to be judged by a panel of expert automotive journalists from the United States and Canada serving as representatives for digital media, print, and broadcast. The 2023 NACTOY awards were composed of 47 commendable vehicles, which jurors continued to slowly eliminate in three rounds of independently established voting to 26 semifinalists, nine first-rate finalists, and, at last, the 2023 winners.

During the year, the group of fifty NACTOY jurors assiduously set aside hundreds of hours evaluating, test driving, and researching trucks according to the following guidelines to allocate the votes that decided the 2023 NACTOY award winners: driver satisfaction, user experience, design, vehicular ingenuity, value, technology, safety, and performance.

Interestingly, Lordstown Motors’ all-electric Endurance was among the 2023 top three trucks when considering that it was facing competition from automobiles built and designed by the much more predominant Ford Motor Company and General Motors. Ultimately, though, the Ford F-150 Lightning amassed 483 votes.

The Growing Influence of the F-150 Lightning

To solidify further prominence, the F-150 Lightning is the best-selling electric truck in the United States and has been since it premiered in May 2022, with sales amounting to 15,617, driving Ford into the No. 2 position among electric vehicle brands in the United States in 2022.

Karl Brauer, NACTOY juror and freelance journalist for Forbes, provides precise reasoning for the pickup truck’s quality: “When America’s best-selling vehicle goes electric, you know the transition has momentum. Ford’s effort to create an all-electric F-150 is remarkable because it combines the standard truck’s dimensions, which means it retains massive aftermarket support, with substantial upgrades to areas like storage and mobile power support.”

To expand upon Brauer’s analysis, the 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning has much of what makes the gasoline-powered F-150 such a beloved truck, only with a dynamic battery-powered electric powertrain. For example, it offers durable road maneuvering, dependable load capacity, safety technology, rousing agility, and superb convenience. The most inventive element of the 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning is that it is both a sturdy full-size pickup truck while also being a dazzling electric vehicle. The automobile is a fulfilling blend of an internal combustion-powered truck and an EV. Maybe that is why the recognition of achievement, from TIME Top 200 Invention of 2022 to the 2023 Kelley Blue Book Best Buy Award, continues to pour in, mainly because it represents the shift to an electrified future without removing the characteristics that are necessary for the F-150 to reach the height of its segment.
