Ford and Red Bull F1 Collaboration

Formula One’s lofty popularity in the United States has persuaded another American automaker to join the series. Ford proclaimed in early February 2023 that it would make a comeback to the series as the engine provider for Red Bull Racing. The partnership starts with prompt technical support this 2023 season. Still, Ford engines will be powered up in 2026 when F1 officially authorizes the new hybrid regulations that brought Ford back after having withdrawn 24 years ago when the Blue Oval sold Jaguar to Red Bull.

The Red Bull team was previously talking over a potential affiliation with Porsche before even considering Ford as a partner in the sport. Still, the deal did not go as planned when the Stuttgart brand desired more control of Red Bull’s business than it was inclined to allow.

Interestingly, the details surrounding Ford’s involvement were revealed ahead of schedule, as the BBC claims it received the enticing information from Ansa, an Italian news agency that acknowledged publishing an official announcement in error before hastily retracting it. Formula 1 later confirmed Ford’s entry into the sport but decided not to divulge which team it would be associated with. In the future, from 2026, both Red Bull and Alpha Tauri cars will be run by Ford-branded engines in a fair deal that trades naming rights for funding and technical guidance.

Ford has a History of Winning

Ford is certain about what it wants to accomplish, as Mark Rushbrook, global director of Ford Performance, proclaimed to The Associated Press: “Red Bull is committed to winning, and they’ve demonstrated that they are capable of winning. We want to be in motorsports for the technology and for the marketing, but we want to do it winning and with the right partner.”

To put Ford’s unabashed drive into perspective, the company mostly eclipsed its F1 contenders in the late 1960s and 1970s as the engine manufacturer for Cosworth. The American automaker is the third most outstanding engine creator in F1 history, with ten constructors’ championships and thirteen drivers’ championships. In short, Ford won 176 races.

Red Bull and Honda

Red Bull Formula 1 cars currently come with engines powered by Honda and will remain that way until the year 2025, just prior to the changes in the rules. It has been disclosed that Honda previously backed out of the deal in 2021 but altered its course of action in 2022 for a partnership that was supposed to extend to 2023 no longer. That judgment was also revised, considering that the Japanese brand decided to carry on with the deal until the end of 2025 when, according to the BBC, Ford will take its place in co-funding the upgrade of a new engine with Red Bull.

General Motors also collaborates with Andretti Global to be its engine supplier if Andretti gets an F1 team. Achieving such a goal may be easier said than done, however, because there is an ongoing debate about the development of a completely new team. The question remains whether everyone in the hypothetical Andretti-Cadillac team will obtain their fair share of the profits.

At the moment, it remains vague whether an Andretti entry will occur, but if it does, two of the “Big Three” American automakers could face each other in F1. The perception of such a rivalry will be excellent for Ford, as the deal will probably be high-priced, and an automobile with Ford’s logo on the side could be ideal in a competitive environment.
