The Bullitt edition was the last time Ford premiered a new named iteration of its iconic car, and that was in 2001. Luckily, the seventh-generation Ford Mustang marks the end of this pattern with the dynamic Mustang Dark Horse trim. This is more than just a pretty pony with cold-air induction that functions for some more pound-feet and horsepower. The Dark Horse represents a performance improvement that establishes the basis for Ford’s combustion vehicle racing ventures. In other words, this high-performance muscle car has been redesigned for 2024 but stays steadfastly true to its legacy with rear-wheel drive and available V-8 power. The new sports car has an assortment of upgrades that efficiently prepare it for the future. In particular, the Mustang sports car will be powered by a 5.0-liter V-8, stepped up to 500 horsepower and 418 pound-feet of torque. Nevertheless, the Mustang GT is very close behind, with an apt rating of 480 horsepower. If an optional exhaust upgrade is included, power increases to 486 horsepower. EcoBoost trims see a modest jump to 315 ponies.
Coyote V-8 Engine Potential
Although there have been more powerful Mustang trims in years past, the fourth-generation Coyote V-8 located in the base 2024 Mustang has various modifications to ensure emissions compliance in all applications, not to mention upgrades in performance, like a higher-revving valvetrain and a twin throttle-body cold-air intake. That is to say; the Coyote V-8 is the strongest naturally aspirated 5.0-liter production engine Ford has ever made available. It performs on improved applications, particularly at the internal level, such as more powerful camshafts, forged connecting rods, and a specifically balanced crankshaft. Moreover, the alterations also help the Mustang Dark Horse arrive at its extensive 7,500 revolutions per minute redline while promoting a slight power jolt.
It turns out that this fourth-generation Coyote engine is also found in the Mustang GT. The brand-new dual-throttle body design has now allowed it to reach a standard 480 horsepower rating. Nevertheless, it still requires the optional active performance exhaust system to reach its tipping point of 486 horsepower. Similarly, torque increases to 418 pound-feet with the exhaust upgrade or 415 pound-feet without it. Drivers set on buying the base trim Mustang should be aware that it is equipped with a modernized turbocharged 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine. It has a new direct injection system and many other changes that make the automobile more thrilling while also aspiring to make it fuel efficient.
The main aim is to create a durable association between the driver and the car: “Every time someone gets behind the wheel of a Mustang, we know they want to feel that strong connection to their vehicle – and we’re just as invested in creating that bond. With the increased responsiveness you get from the new dual throttle bodies, we’re wringing every ounce of performance out of our engine so Mustang enthusiasts can have that experience,” commented Suzanne Robinson, Coyote engine program supervisor.
To put it plainly, with the combined availability of 315 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque, the EcoBoost is undoubtedly the most compelling base trim Mustang Ford has ever brought forth.
Pushing it to the Limit
Ed Krenz, Mustang’s chief engineer, outlined it well when he asserted, “Mustang has always pushed the envelope. From Mustang GT to Dark Horse, this is our best 5.0-liter V8 yet. It’s naturally aspirated awesomeness. And Mustang EcoBoost fans are also getting a boost in power to make every Mustang more fun and visceral to drive.”
