The Ford Mustang Mach-E should be cheaper and more abundant in the 2023 model year, with the second-largest Detroit auto manufacturer pledging to “significantly” boost production of the electric vehicle (EV), even while reducing prices “across the board.” Interestingly, the declaration comes on the heels of Tesla’s decision to reduce the cost of products by up to 20 percent, like the Model Y, an immediate rival of the all-electric Mach-E SUV.

There are also rumors roaming around that, after witnessing the dramatic spike in electric vehicle prices in 2022, automakers could be encountering a price battle in 2023. Ford’s actions seem to support such a claim because, depending upon the particular trim package selected, the Blue Oval is cutting the price of the Mach-E anywhere between $600 and $5,900.

“We are not going to cede ground to anyone. We are producing more EVs to reduce customer wait times, offering competitive pricing, and working to create an ownership experience that is second to none,” asserted Marin Gjaja, chief customer officer at Ford’s Model e division, the side of the company focused on battery-electric vehicles. Conveniently for the brand, four of the Mach-E trims will now qualify for the revised federal electric vehicle tax credits courtesy of the price cutbacks.

The Ford+ Plan

The Ford+ Plan is a process that highlights the brand’s promise to lead the electric vehicle shift by increasing the value of its electric vehicles for consumers. Readers must understand that the Mustang Mach-E is the Ford Motor Company’s first battery-electric vehicle and illustrated a profound transformation in the company’s attitude regarding electrification.

The original approach centered on providing a “compliance car,” an automotive industry term for electric vehicles developed to meet stringent zero-emission regulations. However, as the program progressed, Ford officials reexamined their strategy and concluded that the electric crossover warranted a more aggressive design along with sportier handling and performance.

Needless to say, the extra effort did not go unnoticed by customers, and the vehicle’s success went above and beyond expectations. The SUV first made it into the United States market in December 2020 and, as of the 2022 model year, has become the third best-selling electric vehicle in the country. Furthermore, it has been implied by Ford executives that the company would most likely sell more of the Mach-E crossovers if it had the production capacity to do so. Exactly how many more is not yet known, as the manufacturer is remaining tight-lipped about its production plans, but strong demand from would-be buyers intimates that the number will be one to take note of.

The Race Against Tesla

Analysts have reported that the price reductions should assist in raising demand to even greater heights by ensuring that Ford remains steadfastly competitive with Tesla. Tesla is currently the electric vehicle segment leader and continuously hiked up prices in 2022. Curiously, in 2023, it did the exact opposite and slashed prices by as much as 20 percent in January, bringing the prominent Model Y Long Range cost as low as $52,990 MSRP (Plus destination fee).

For the Mach-E crossover SUV, the base Select RWD Standard Range trim is reduced to a starting price tag of $45,995 MSRP (Plus destination fee), a $900 discount. On the other hand, the top-tier trim, the GT Extended Range, goes down from $69,895 MSRP (Plus destination fee) to $63,995 MSRP (Plus destination fee), a solid decrease of $5,900.

Ford appears to be directly reacting to Tesla’s cutbacks, and analysts suspect that the brand is making a preemptive strike. The electric vehicle class has become a highly competitive segment in a relatively short amount of time. To put the evolution of EVs into perspective, all-electric vehicle trims have skyrocketed from about 15 to more than 50 since 2021.
