Ford CEO Jim Farley has tweeted a teaser of the manufacturer’s upcoming electric vehicle performance demonstrator based on the F-150 Lightning, which is instantaneously recognizable by its headlights and body shape. In the image, Farley pulls back a black tarp that showcases part of the automobile’s front end. Formula 1 driver Daniel Ricciardo is also featured on the Instagram post and has reportedly already gotten a good look at the truck. The all-new F-150 Lightning commemorates Ford’s celebrated partnership with Red Bull and the company’s return to Formula 1 after over two decades. Specifically, the automaker recently announced that it would serve as Red Bull Racing’s engine supplier beginning in 2026. Of course, electrification forms part of the overall strategy. Following the newly established Red Bull Ford, the Blue Oval announced its belief in the connection between racing and producing winning products.

The Significance of Performance Demonstrators

Amid its announcement, Ford Performance emphasized a slide that displayed a new electric vehicle performance demonstrator centered on the F-150 Lightning. More importantly, perhaps, is the tagline “coming soon.” To better understand why performance demonstrators carry such weight in the automotive industry, a consumer needs to comprehend that the name is a sophisticated term for a one-off concept that illustrates the innovative packaging possibilities and the electric performance potential powertrains can provide.

Such concepts are no stranger to Ford because the company has already created three electric vehicle performance demonstrators. For example, the F-100 Eluminator is an electrified variant of Ford’s iconic truck equipped with the Eluminator electric crate motor. There is also the Mustang Mach-E 1400, a wildly robust iteration of the well-known electric crossover SUV that, as the name suggests, can accelerate up to 1,400 horsepower. Last but certainly not least is the Electric SuperVan, worthy of mention for making over 2,000 horsepower. The van was officially premiered at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the 2022 model year.

High-Performance Vehicle?

As of February 2023, it remains to be seen what sort of performance vehicle this brand-new electric vehicle demonstrator will be. However, the F-150 Lightning on which it is based has been lowered to the ground and outfitted with street tires. That tidbit of information allows individuals to deduce that the future could bring a rugged, tire-shredding truck to the road. A closer inspection of the image also unveils something protruding from the automobile’s bed just behind the cab, although whatever it may be is still shrouded in mystery. It is worth noting that the new demonstrator must pack quite a punch to draw attention from the already powerfully brawny F-150 Lightning, capable of revving up to 580 horsepower while producing 775 pound-feet of torque. That equates to 0-60 miles per hour in fewer than four seconds, already leading to a rapid-fire beast.

Even though the Ford F-150 Lightning specifications are available for viewing, particular aspects of the new F-150 Lightning-based demonstrator, including its upgrades and power output, could be more explicit. Nonetheless, it is expected to have an equally imposing performance as the other three previously mentioned electric vehicle performance demonstrators. Ford has yet to deliver any concrete details concerning the launch of the new demonstrator. Still, if world-renowned race car drivers are getting a peek at it, it is not far-fetched to believe that a public appearance of the automobile could be right around the corner.
