In terms of sales in the market for the United States, Ford was able to claw its way up to a phenomenal closing of the 2022 model year with higher transaction prices and significantly lower incentive spending than initially expected. In comparison to the year before, sales rose by 16%, while the overall automotive industry, in contrast, was flat. In fact, Ford outpaced the industry in the United States considerably. The brand was able to close on a positive note primarily due to much-improved inventory and appealing new trims. Of course, the automaker’s latest trims displayed the most significant gains. Electric vehicles like the small Maverick pickup truck that comes standard with a hybrid powertrain, for example, saw a mind-boggling increase of 104% compared to a year ago. As Andrew Frick, vice president, Sales, Distribution & Trucks, Ford Blue can corroborate, “Strong order demand continues with overall retail orders for ’23 model year vehicles.”

Indeed, Ford continues to witness a high demand for its electric vehicles, as EV sales in November (2022) increased at approximately twice the rate of the general segment. The powerful interest in the brand’s new electric vehicles helped counterbalance an otherwise difficult struggle with parts shortages and supply chain complications. However, segments such as the compact pickup truck market–floundering just a few years ago–have been making a resurgence in a significant way. The Maverick has proven to be a practical vehicle priced competitively with impressive fuel economy, thanks predominantly to its hybrid powertrain. According to the statistics, Maverick sales totaled 68,492 through November and were up 189 percent for the month relative to a year ago.

Ford Plans to Increase Electric Vehicle Production

Ford is incorporating a formula designed to bring in lucrative profit margins. The brand is looking to roll out electric vehicles at a yearly rate of 600,000 by late 2023 and more than 2 million by 2026. Even though the strategy is sound, as the demand is currently skyrocketing, the crucial point to accommodating this demand will be to guarantee supply. So far, the automaker is boosting efforts to increase production of the F-150 Lightning as quickly as possible. A superb accomplishment is that, fewer than seven months after the beginning of production, Ford has already added a third production shift in the Michigan plant that is leading the way in terms of putting together this trim. As Corey Williams, plant manager of the Dearborn Truck Plant and Rouge electric vehicle center, points out, this endeavor entails running three rotating crews of workers on 10-hour shifts seven days a week.

Growth, Growth, and Even More Growth

To ensure supply rises in accordance with demand, Ford aims to maintain a staggering degree of production even as construction workers clamber to finish an expansion of the plant. As Corey Williams succinctly said, “That’s how we’re doing this fast. We’re building product while building out the factory.” In other words, the facility’s manpower has gone from 500 previously to 750 employees. That is a definite 50 percent increase.

While the triumphs of Ford’s electric vehicles are truly impressive, sales of its other products, especially hybrid vehicles, are also seeing a massive increase. Sales of the Maverick and F-150 Lightning hybrids have been substantial, expressed by the fact that they are the best-selling hybrid trucks in the United States.

It has been a massively prosperous time for the Blue Oval brand, especially in the electric vehicle segment. It illustrates not only the powerful desire for an EV but also how highly esteemed Ford’s electric vehicles are.
