Dearborn-based Ford Motor Company’s second quarter electric vehicle, truck, and newly launched automobile sales resulted in an overall gain of 11.2 percent in the 2023 model year. This bucked an industry trend of declining sales in the second quarter. Ford is now the nation’s best-selling brand and has had the best-selling pickup truck in the United States for six consecutive months.

As a matter of fact, the F-Series has been the best-selling truck in America for 46 years in a row. The automaker’s truck sales accelerated in the second quarter, increasing 26.2 percent on the back of the new Super Duty as well as better inventory flow. This is the second consecutive quarterly profit for Ford and the best second-quarter sales performance since pre-Covid 2019. Moreover, the Ford F-Series increases its lead over the Chevrolet Silverado in pursuit of America’s best-selling truck and vehicle title. Ford’s pickup sales were up 27.9 percent for the year.

Elements to Being the Top Manufacturer

This resulted in the Blue Oval being the top truck manufacturer in the second quarter and for the first half of 2023. Sales rose 26.2 percent in the second quarter. To clarify, through the first half of 2023, Ford’s overall truck sales totaled 549,625, climbing 23.1 percent and outselling General Motors’ vans and trucks by roughly 61,000 pickup trucks.

The carmaker’s electric vehicle sales continue to expand by thriving on the sales impetus of the Mach-E and F-150 Lightning, which accomplished higher sales through stronger inventory. In fact, the manufacturer sold 4,466 electric F-150 Lightning trucks in the second quarter. It has sold 8,757 so far in 2023. In contrast, Chevrolet saw sales decline 1.2 percent in Q2 to 141,299, but it is up 1.6 percent for the year (2023).

Andrew Frick, vice president, sales distribution, and trucks, elaborated upon the reasons for the Blue Oval’s steady growth: “Ford achieved both best-selling brand and truck sales for six consecutive months this year on the strength of F-Series, vans, our new Escape and F-150 Lightning. Our EV sales continue to grow. Improved Mustang Mach-E inventory flow began to hit at the end of Q2 following the retooling of our plant earlier this year, which helped Mustang Mach-E sales climb 110 percent in June.”

The Figures for Other Ford Trucks

Ford Ranger sales decreased for the second quarter, dipping 22.1 percent over the last three months. However, it is worth noting that consumers are likely waiting for the all-new 2024 trim that launched in May 2023. It will go on sale this summer (2023), along with the Ranger Raptor. The Ranger Raptor will be available for the first time in the United States, complete with a 405-horsepower twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine. That said, the Ford Maverick continues to outsell the Hyundai Santa Cruz. The automaker has sold twice as many Maverick compact pickup trucks so far.

Indeed, combined sales of the Ranger, F-Series, and Maverick totaled 246,155 trucks in Q2 of 2023, representing a 26.7 percent increase over the sales achieved in 2022. With the new Ranger on the horizon, it can be expected that Ford will post even stronger truck sales in 2024.
